You may have seen the news today about cancer in the workplace – with research from Macmillan stating that one-fifth of people diagnosed with cancer face discrimination from employers or colleagues on return to work. But what can a responsible employer do with respect to cancer screening for their employees?
One in two people will develop cancer at some point in their lives, according to the most accurate forecast to date from Cancer Research UK.
The better news is that UK’s cancer survival rate has doubled over the last 40 years and around half of patients now survive the disease for more than 10 years.
When it comes to the health screening elements of employee wellness, any provider has to consider (a) prevention – identification of risk factors that can reduce your likelihood of developing a disease and (b) early detection – recognising the fact that the earlier you identify a cancer, the sooner you can take action to treat it. As we all know, the quicker the treatment, the greater the chance of a successful outcome. Also early cancers often require less aggressive and extensive treatment- meaning less side effects and less time off work.
