5 things you can do for your health today

In today’s society, it seems like everyone is always on the go. With so many distractions and endless opportunities for entertainment, it can be hard to focus on your health. But there are a few things you can do in just a short amount of time to make yourself feel better. Here are five strategies that will help you get started today: 

1) Drink more water 

We all know that we should drink more water. But why? Simply put, our brains aren’t able to function properly without enough fluids, and dehydration can lead to problems such as headaches, moodiness, and difficulty concentrating. 

Therefore, drinking plenty of fluids every day can do wonders for your body and mind. It’s no wonder that doctors often recommend drinking 8 glasses of fluid per day to stay healthy. Drinking enough water will help you:

  • Reduce headaches and fatigue.

2) Eat more vegetables

Working out is not just for people who want to look good. Exercise also helps our bodies function better and keeps the heart and lungs strong, which allows us to be healthier overall. Additionally, constant over-indulgence in these types of foods can have a negative impact on our mental health by making us feel tired most of the time. That’s why it is important that we try to keep our diets in check.

Here are some tips to help you cut down on sugar and unhealthy fats in your diet:   

  • Watch out for hidden sugars in foods you wouldn’t expect such as canned vegetables or certain brands of Greek yogurt. 
  • Make your own healthy snacks at home by using natural sweeteners, like agave nectar, instead of sugar whenever possible.
  • Opt for lean cuts of meats and lower fat options (such as 5% fat beef mince)
  • Cut down on sugary drinks – instead opt for water, tea, or coffee without sugar. 
  • Avoid using too much butter, oil, and lard in your cooking. 
  • Avoid eating processed foods.
  • Treat yourself occasionally but in smaller portions.

5) Get enough sleep

Lastly, make sure you’re getting enough rest. Along with feeling tired throughout the day, not sleeping well leaves us more susceptible to illness and injury when we’re out and about. Try going to bed a little earlier tonight in order to get that much needed extra sleep. If you have difficulties falling asleep, you can try the following:  

  • Try not to look at any screens for at least an hour before bed. 
  • Keep your bedroom cool and dark. 
  • Write down what’s on your mind so you can leave it behind when you go to sleep. 
  • Don’t have alcohol before bedtime – it can disrupt sleep later in the night. 
  • Try a breathing exercise or guided mediation to help you fall asleep faster.
