Omega 3 and

6

Omega 3 and 6 are essential fatty acids – omega 3 is commonly found in plant and fish oils, and omega 6 is commonly found in seed oils, eggs and nuts.

In the right ratios, both omega 3 and omega 6 are essential for keeping your body in good health. However, in modern Western diets we usually have too much omega 6 and too little omega 3. This imbalance is believed to increase the risk of inflammatory diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Since your body can’t produce omega 3 or 6 by itself, it’s important that you eat a balanced diet to ensure you’re getting the right amounts of each. Typically, Western diets don’t contain enough omega 3 and contain far too much omega 6. Whilst this may not appear to be much of a problem, this imbalance actually increases your risk of a multitude of conditions including type 2 diabetes, obesity and heart disease. There is also evidence to suggest that these oils protect the heart and make joints more supple.
