Prostate Cancer Risk

(PSA)

PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) is a protein made by the prostate that naturally leaks into the bloodstream. Sometimes a raised PSA level can be a sign of prostate cancer, but in many cases it’s caused by something less serious. Men with prostate cancer may have high levels of PSA, although it’s important to remember some men with prostate cancer do not have raised PSA levels (false negative result), and many noncancerous conditions, such as simply an enlarged or inflamed prostate can also increase your PSA levels (false positive result). This test is only recommended for men aged 40-79 due to the risk of false positive or negative results.
