Full Blood Count (FBC) Test

Full Blood Count (FBC)

Test

An FBC Test (full blood count) is a common test used in most essential health screenings. A full blood count looks at the different cells in your blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. This can help diagnose certain health conditions like anaemia.

Your results explained in detail

Your digital Results Report explains each one of your test results in detail, with no confusing medical jargon. You’ll receive the actual reading for every test we've run, with each result given a 'flag' of green, amber or red.

Green results are within the recommended range for your age and sex; amber results are a little outside what we'd normally expect; and red results are further outside the norm.

Where a result is amber or red, we'll give follow-up advice on what to do next - whether that's making lifestyle changes, simply monitoring the result, or visiting a doctor for further investigation.

The normal reference ranges for an FBC (Full Blood Count) test can vary slightly depending on the laboratory doing the test and the population being tested. However, here are typical reference ranges for some key components of an FBC: ? Red Blood Cells (RBC): 4.5 to 6.0 million cells/mcL ? White Blood Cells (WBC): 4,000 to 11,000 cells/mcL ? Haemoglobin (Hb): 13.5 to 17.5 grams/deciliter (g/dL) for adult males; 12.0 to 15.5 g/dL for adult females ? Hematocrit (Hct): 38.3% to 48.6% for adult males; 35.5% to 44.9% for adult females ? Platelets: 150,000 to 450,000 platelets/mcL It's important to note that these values can vary, and the interpretation of FBC results should be done by a healthcare professional. Reference ranges may differ for different age groups, genders, and populations.
An FBC (Full Blood Count) test is not typically considered a routine or general screening test for everyone. Instead, it is often ordered based on clinical indications or specific health concerns. Healthcare providers may recommend an FBC test for individuals exhibiting symptoms that suggest blood-related issues, such as fatigue, weakness, unexplained bruising or bleeding, recurrent infections, or symptoms of anaemia. However, there is very little risk to having a blood test. You may have slight pain or bruising from the needle but most symptoms go away quickly.
Your test results and other readings will each be given a ‘flag’ of a different colour: green, amber or red. If there are any critical results discovered by our laboratory who analyses your samples, we will contact you immediately, so you won’t need to wait for your full Results Report to arrive to take appropriate action.
