What is an LH Blood Test?

An LH (Luteinising Hormone) Blood Test measures the amount of LH in your blood to check how well your reproductive system is functioning. It provides insights into fertility and reproductive health and can help identify underlying issues that may affect conception.

LH testing is often done alongside other hormone tests, such as FSH, testosterone, oestradiol and progesterone, to give a complete picture of reproductive function in men and women.

Common uses of an LH Blood Test:

  • Menopause

  • Testicular failure

  • Ovarian failure

  • Pituitary disorders

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

An LH Test is quick, simple and helps you understand your reproductive health and fertility status.

What is LH in a Blood Test?

LH is produced by the pituitary gland and controls the function of the sex organs.

  • In women: LH triggers the ovaries to release an egg.

  • In men: LH supports testosterone production.

Measuring LH in the blood shows whether your ovaries or testes are functioning normally.

Why take an LH Blood Test?

The test is recommended if you are concerned about your fertility or reproductive health. It is particularly useful if you experience:

  • Irregular or absent periods

  • Difficulty trying to conceive

  • Wanting to check fertility in men or women

An LH Test can detect hidden fertility issues or undiagnosed reproductive conditions.

What does the test involve?

A small blood sample is taken from a vein in your arm using a fine needle. The test is quick and mostly painless, typically taking less than five minutes. Your sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Preparation tips:

  • Avoid biotin supplements for 72 hours before the test

  • Drink plenty of water to help with blood collection

  • Take prescribed anticoagulants after the test, not before

  • Wear loose clothing for easy access to your arm

FAQs

A LH Blood Test measures the levels of luteinising hormone in the bloodstream. Healthy levels of LH are associated with the proper functioning of the reproductive system. An LH Blood Test can determine if there are any underlying fertility issues or health conditions. When trying to conceive, an LH Blood Test can be helpful in getting an overall impression of your fertility and reproductive health status.

A LH Blood Test can help to detect the following issues and health conditions:

  • Pituitary disorders
  • Hypothalamic disorders
  • Testicular failure
  • Ovarian failure
  • Onset of menopause
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Fertility
  • Difficulty conceiving

If the results of an LH Blood Test are outside of the healthy range, additional tests are performed to determine the cause.

Full preparation instructions will be provided in writing when you book your appointment.

For women, should your LH Blood Test show high levels of luteinising hormones throughout the month, this could indicate dysfunction of the ovaries. Normally LH levels rise and fall at different times of the menstruation cycle. Typically, a surge of LH two weeks after menstruation suggests that the ovaries function normally. Consistently high or low results could indicate an underlying pituitary disorder or that the reproductive organs are not working as they should.

In men, a high LH level combined with a low testosterone level could be a sign that the testes are not producing adequate amounts of testosterone. On the other hand, low LH levels indicate that the pituitary gland is not making sufficient LH, which can also negatively affect fertility.

There is no need to fast before the LH Blood Test. However, if taking the supplement biotin, you should refrain from taking this for 72 hours before the LH Blood Test.
