What is a urinalysis Test?

A urinalysis test examines a urine sample to check for signs of health issues or dysfunction. It is also used to monitor ongoing medical conditions.

Urine is produced by the kidneys as they filter waste products, urea, and excess water from the blood. It travels through the ureters to the bladder before being eliminated.

By analysing the colour, appearance, concentration and content of urine, a urinalysis can provide valuable insights into kidney function, liver health, infection risk, and overall wellbeing.

The test uses visual, chemical and microscopic analysis to give a comprehensive view of your health.

Why take a urinalysis Test?

A urinalysis is a simple way to monitor how well your body’s systems are functioning. It can help:

  • Check your overall health

  • Diagnose kidney or liver disease

  • Assess diabetes or prediabetes risk

  • Detect bacterial infections such as UTIs

  • Identify yeast infections

  • Spot liver or bile duct damage

  • Detect kidney or bladder stones

  • Monitor pre-existing conditions

The test is useful whether you are experiencing symptoms or simply want to understand your health better. You may be advised to take a urinalysis if you notice:

  • Abdominal or back pain

  • Frequent urination

  • Painful urination

  • Blood in the urine

It is also recommended to track the progress of previously diagnosed conditions such as UTIs, kidney or liver disease, and diabetes.

What is tested for in a urinalysis?

A urinalysis involves three stages of testing to detect a wide range of disorders and infections:

1. Visual assessment The colour, clarity and appearance of urine can reveal clues about your health. Healthy urine is usually clear and pale yellow. Cloudy, foamy, or dark-tinted urine may indicate infection or other health concerns.

2. Chemical test A chemically treated strip is dipped into the urine to detect substances such as:

  • pH level (acidity)

  • Protein, glucose or ketones

  • Bilirubin or blood

  • Nitrites and leukocytes (common in UTIs)

3. Microscopic analysis A concentrated urine sample is examined under a microscope to check for:

  • Red and white blood cells

  • Bacteria

  • Crystals

This stage helps detect infections and abnormalities in kidney or liver function.

FAQs

Our Urinalysis Test can be carried out at home using a self-collection kit with clear instructions on how to collect a urine sample.

Your results will be given a ‘flag’ of a different colour: green, amber or red. Green results are within the recommended range for your age and sex; amber results are slightly outside what we'd normally expect; and red results are further outside the norm.

Where a result is amber or red, we'll give follow-up advice on what to do next - whether that's making lifestyle changes, simply monitoring the result, or visiting your doctor for further investigation.

A Urinalysis Test can be added to any of our health assessment packages.

Along with your at-home self-collection kit, you will find clear instructions on how to easily take a urine sample. Before collecting your sample, read through the instructions and make sure you wash your hands thoroughly. Simply collect a small sample midstream as you feel the urge to pass urine. Once you have the sample, follow the instructions to return it for analysis.
