Basic Liver

Function

Your liver plays a vital role in maintaining your overall health, performing essential tasks like detoxifying your blood, producing vital proteins, and storing nutrients. Liver function tests (LFTs) are a series of blood tests designed to evaluate the health of this hardworking organ. These tests can detect abnormalities, monitor ongoing conditions, and help guide treatment decisions.

At Bluecrest Wellness, we understand the importance of early detection and preventative care, offering comprehensive health assessments to keep you informed and in control of your well-being. Read on to discover why liver function tests are crucial and what the results can reveal about your health.

ALP

This normal Liver function test looks at ALP (alkaline phosphatase), ALT (alanine aminotransferase), Gamma GT (Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase), and Bilirubin to understand if there are any issues with your Liver function

ALP (alkaline phosphatase) helps to break down proteins in your body. Abnormal levels of ALP in your blood can suggest a problem with your liver or gallbladder.

ALT

ALT (alanine aminotransferase) is another enzyme produced by your liver. Like AST, your ALT levels should usually be low. But your liver damage causes higher levels to be released into your bloodstream.

Gamma GT

Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) is another liver enzyme. When your liver is injured or there is an obstruction to your flow of bile, the GGT concentration in your bloodstream increases.

Bilirubin

Bilirubin, a byproduct of red blood cell breakdown, is processed by the liver and excreted through bile and urine. Blood tests measure total bilirubin or its components (direct and indirect), revealing liver function and waste clearance. Elevated levels may signal liver disease, bile duct issues, or red blood cell disorders, offering early insights into potential health concerns.
