Always feeling fatigued and

tired?

Tiredness is a normal part of life but when this tiredness and fatigue persists, it becomes a cause for concern. If there are no immediate reasons as to why you may be feeling more tired than usual, there may be an underlying condition causing a long-term lack of energy.

To give you peace of mind, blood tests for extreme fatigue can help rule out health conditions such as diabetes or thyroid dysfunction that can impact energy levels. Often, we experience a dip in our energy levels when our bodies become deficient in a vital vitamin or mineral. A Tiredness and Fatigue Blood Test can help to pinpoint any deficiencies in our diet, from iron to B vitamins and more.

What causes tiredness and

fatigue?

We all experience periods of low energy at certain points in our lives, which are understandable when we have disrupted sleep or changes to our daily routines. Sometimes, there is no obvious explanation for long-term lack of energy. Here are a few common lifestyle causes of tiredness and fatigue to consider:

  • Poor quality of sleep
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Stress

If you feel that your tiredness and fatigue are not due to any of these lifestyle factors, then a health issue or deficiency could be to blame. Medical reasons as to why you might be feeling tired all the time include:

  • B vitamin deficiency
  • Anaemia
  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Diabetes
  • Menopause and hormonal changes
  • Insomnia
  • Depression
  • ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis)
  • CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome)

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are a common cause of tiredness and fatigue that can be easily remedied. Should your Tiredness and Fatigue Blood Test reveal a vitamin or mineral deficiency, dietary changes can be made to increase your specific micronutrients intake. Supplements can also be taken to ensure that you receive an optimum level of a range of vitamins and minerals.

Diabetes and issues with thyroid function can also be detected through taking blood tests for fatigue. High blood sugar levels can disrupt the body’s ability to use sugar for energy, resulting in feelings of fatigue amongst diabetes sufferers. Thyroid disorders can cause tiredness due to the way it affects the metabolism. Ruling out these health conditions by taking a Fatigue and Tiredness Blood Test can give you peace of mind.

What blood tests are done for tiredness and

fatigue?

To get a better understanding of the causes of tiredness and fatigue, there are several blood tests that check for imbalances and deficiencies in the body. As part of our Essential or Advanced Energy checks, the following tests are included:

  • Cholesterol and Advanced Diabetes
  • Bone Health, Energy and Muscles
  • Body Composition Scan
  • Essential Proteins and Iron
  • Vitamin D
  • Thyroid Function
  • Kidney Function
  • Iron Stores

The Advanced Energy Profile also includes tests for vitamin B12, vitamin B9, as well as heart and lung health checks and other blood markers.

Vitamin B12 and B9 (folate) play important roles in regulating the nervous system. Energy production also requires sufficient vitamin B12 levels in order to combat feelings of tiredness and fatigue.

Another micronutrient deficiency to watch out for is low iron levels, which can lead to anaemia. Iron is essential for haemoglobin production which enables red blood cells to carry oxygen around the body. Therefore low iron equals reduced amounts of oxygen rich blood flowing around the body. This lack of oxygen can make you feel tired.

What are the benefits of a tiredness and fatigue blood

test?

No one wants to feel tired all the time. Certain blood tests can help find the cause, leading to quick and effective treatment. The benefits of taking a Tiredness and Fatigue Blood Test include:

  • A good starting point to explore feelings of tiredness and fatigue
  • Detecting diabetes
  • Reveals thyroid dysfunction
  • Iron deficiencies and anaemia
  • Highlights B12 and B9 deficiencies
  • Could suggest a need for dietary changes to include more nutrient rich foods
  • Checking your overall health
  • Detects Vitamin D deficiency linked to tiredness and immune system dysfunction

FAQs

Tiredness and Fatigue Blood Tests work by exploring the biomarkers that may influence feelings of low energy. A trained health assessment specialist takes a blood sample and asks a few questions about your health and lifestyle. They will also guide you through the other tests such as the lung function test and biometric analysis. The whole process should take approximately 25 minutes.
There is no need to fast prior to the Tiredness and Fatigue Blood Test. We have upgraded our range of tests so you can continue to eat and drink normally before your assessment takes place, but full preparation instructions will be provided in writing when you book your appointment.
Your results will be given a ‘flag’ of a different colour: green, amber or red. Green results are within the recommended range for your age and sex; amber results are slightly outside what we'd normally expect; and red results are further outside the norm. Where a result is amber or red, we'll give follow-up advice on what to do next - whether that's making lifestyle changes, simply monitoring the result, or visiting your doctor for further investigation. If there are any critical results discovered by our laboratory, we will contact you immediately, so you won’t need to wait for your full results report to arrive to take appropriate action.
