What is a PSA test?

A PSA test is used to detect prostate cancer. It examines the levels of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) in your blood.

What is Prostate Specific Antigen?

PSA is a protein produced by normal cells in the prostate. It’s also produced by prostate cancer cells. It’s normal to have a small amount of PSA in your blood, and the amount rises slightly as you get older, because the prostate tends to get bigger.

A raised PSA level may suggest you have a problem with your prostate, but not necessarily cancer.

What does a PSA test involve?

The test involves a blood test, which is taken as part of a series of tests which make up our early cancer add-on.

What does a high or positive result

mean?

Sometimes raised PSA levels can be a sign of prostate cancer, but in many cases it’s caused by a noncancerous condition, such as an enlarged or inflamed prostate.

If your results come back as abnormal, you shouldn’t worry, but you should go to your GP for further investigation.

Who should have a PSA test?

The PSA blood test is only recommended for men aged 40-79 due to the risk of false positive or negative results.
