
Triglycerides Explained: Healthy Levels, Causes and How to Lower Them
Most people have heard of cholesterol. Far fewer know what triglycerides are. Yet they appear on standard blood fat tests (lipid panels) and matter for your health.
When people talk about their cholesterol results, they almost always mean total cholesterol, HDL, and sometimes LDL. Triglycerides appear on the same blood test, but they tend to get much less attention. Triglycerides are a distinct type of fat circulating in your blood and they respond to different lifestyle factors than cholesterol does. At raised levels, they carry specific and serious health risks that are worth understanding.
What are triglycerides?
Triglycerides are the most common type of fat found in the body. After you eat, your body converts any calories it doesn't need right away into triglycerides. These are stored in fat cells and released between meals to provide energy when it's needed. This is a normal and essential process.
Problems start when triglyceride levels in the blood stay high over time. This can happen when the body consistently produces more triglycerides than it uses. This pattern is linked to a diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates, heavy alcohol use, not being physically active, and certain underlying health conditions.
What does a non-fasting triglyceride test measure?
Triglyceride levels naturally rise after eating, especially after a fatty or sugary meal. In the past, blood fat tests (lipid panels) were taken after a 12-hour fast, to capture a baseline level unaffected by recent food.
Non-fasting tests take a different approach. Rather than measuring a fasting baseline, they capture your triglyceride level at a typical moment in your day, after you've eaten normally. This gives a useful snapshot of your typical triglyceride levels across the day. However, recent food intake can affect the result: a heavy meal in the hours before the test can push the number higher than your usual level.
A single result on its own is a useful, but imperfect, snapshot. A pattern across several tests, taken under similar conditions, tells you more.
What is a healthy triglyceride level?
Triglyceride results are measured in millimoles per litre (mmol/L). The healthy guide differs slightly depending on whether you have eaten before your blood test.

A fasting target is lower because eating naturally causes triglycerides to rise for several hours. For routine cardiovascular risk assessment, however, you do not usually need to fast before having a lipid profile.
These figures are general guides for healthy adults rather than diagnostic cut-offs. Your results should be considered alongside your cholesterol levels, wider health and cardiovascular risk factors.
What level of triglycerides is dangerous?
Raised triglycerides are linked to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke in large population studies. They're often reviewed alongside HDL and Non-HDL cholesterol as part of the wider picture of heart and blood vessel health (cardiovascular health), because these markers tend to move together.
A pattern often linked to higher heart and circulatory risk is the combination of raised triglycerides, low HDL, and raised Non-HDL cholesterol. This cluster is sometimes called a harmful pattern of blood fats (atherogenic dyslipidaemia). If your triglyceride result is raised, it's worth checking how the other markers in your blood fat results (lipid profile) look alongside it.
At very high levels, well above the usual monitoring thresholds, triglycerides carry an extra and distinct risk: inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). This is a serious medical emergency. The risk is specifically linked to very high triglyceride levels, not to mildly or moderately raised results.
Triglycerides above 10 mmol/L require prompt medical review and further investigation. For levels above 20 mmol/L that cannot be explained by factors such as excess alcohol intake or poor blood glucose control, urgent specialist review is required.
What causes high triglycerides?
The main lifestyle factors linked to raised triglycerides are somewhat different from those that drive cholesterol.
- Sugar and refined carbohydrates: When you eat more carbohydrates than your body needs for energy, or when your body has become less responsive to insulin (insulin resistance), the surplus is converted into triglycerides in the liver. Sugary drinks, fruit juice, white bread, white rice, and highly processed snack foods are the sources most often linked to raised levels.
- Alcohol: Alcohol has a direct effect on how much triglyceride the liver produces. Even a moderate amount can raise levels in some people. Heavy drinking is one of the most consistent causes of significantly raised triglycerides.
- Physical inactivity: Aerobic exercise has a well-documented effect in lowering triglycerides, even in relatively modest amounts, such as 30 minutes of brisk walking a day.
- Body weight: Carrying excess weight, particularly around the stomach and abdomen (visceral fat), is linked to higher triglyceride levels in the blood.
- Genetics: Some people carry genetic variants that cause triglycerides to run high regardless of lifestyle, including rare conditions that can cause dramatic increases.
- Underlying health conditions: Type 2 diabetes, an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), and kidney disease can all affect triglyceride levels.
How can I lower triglycerides?
The most effective dietary changes for triglycerides focus on reducing the things that drive triglyceride production in the liver, rather than cutting fat.
- Cut sugary drinks and fruit juice: These are liquid sugar. They raise triglycerides quickly, without the fibre or fullness that comes from solid food.
- Reduce refined carbohydrates: White bread, white rice, and other highly processed carbohydrate foods have a similar effect to sugar.
- Reduce alcohol intake: Even cutting down from a high intake to a moderate one is linked to a meaningful drop in triglycerides. Alcohol-free drinks are now widely available and offer a good alternative.
- Add omega-3 fatty acids: Oily fish, such as mackerel, trout, sardines, and salmon, provides two marine omega-3 fats called EPA and DHA. These have the strongest and most well-documented effect on lowering triglycerides. The NHS recommends at least two portions of fish each week, including at least one portion of oily fish.
- Move more: Aerobic exercise is one of the most consistent ways to lower triglycerides. A daily 30-minute walk is a reasonable and achievable target.
