Bluecrest

H. pylori (Helicobacter Pylori) is a bacteria that commonly infects the digestive system and can damage the protective lining of the small intestine and stomach. This bacteria is thought to be present in 4 in 10 people in the UK. It often causes no harm but is strongly associated with gastric (stomach) ulcers and those of the duodenum (start of the small bowel).  It is estimated that about 15% of people with H. pylori infection will go on to develop an ulcer.

The test is suitable for adults over 18 years old, and is used in people experiencing symptoms of a digestive disorder as testing and treatment may help avoid serious complications.

What is a H. pylori test?

The three main ways for testing for H. pylori infection are:

  • Blood tests – which check for antibodies to H. pylori with a small blood sample
  • Stool tests – which check for antigen to H. pylori with a small stool sample
  • Breath tests – which check for infection by assessing the substances in your breath

Our home H.pylori test kits constitute a highly convenient option to test for the bacteria as they simply involve taking a small blood sample from the comfort of your own home. They are self-administered with minimal preparation involved, and results are available within just a few days.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the first symptoms of a H. Pylori infection?

Most people with a H. pylori infection do not experience any symptoms. However, in others, it can be associated with symptoms similar to those of a gastritis, which makes it difficult to diagnose. The most common symptoms indicating a potential H. pylori infection include the following:

    • Bloating
    • Burping
    • Nausea
    • Loss of appetite
  • Is H. Pylori contagious?

    H. Pylori is a bacteria and can be passed on to others through saliva, vomit or faecal matter. However, most people who have it in the UK acquired the infection when they were children. H. pylori infection is fortunately becoming less common in the UK and people here are unlikely to pass it to someone else.

  • What do H. Pylori test results mean?

A negative H. pylori test result means that you probably do not have a H. pylori infection, and a positive H. pylori test means that you do have an infection. However, it is essential to note that you can test positive if you have previously had the infection and been treated for it.

  • How serious is a H. Pylori infection?

In most people, infection with H. pylori will cause no harm. However in about 15% of cases an ulcer in the stomach or duodenum will develop. Ulcers can be dangerous causing internal bleeding, stomach perforation, peritonitis and bowel obstruction.

  • Is H. Pylori curable?

    H. pylori is usually treated with a combination of tablets taken for a week. This is typically two different antibiotics together with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) to reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces.

  • What foods should you avoid if you have a H. Pylori infection?

You may be able to relieve some of the symptoms of acid reflux and stomach problems by avoiding foods and drinks that can irritate the stomach and/or stimulate gastric juice secretion. These include:

    • Coffee
    • Alcohol
    • Chocolate
    • Cheese
    • Sour fruits
    • Spicy foods
    • Peppery foods
    • Fatty foods

It is essential to note that these are not a substitute for treatment if you are found to have a H. pylori infection.
