Bluecrest crestThyroid Function Home Test Kit

Bluecrest

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the bottom of the neck. It is a part of the endocrine system, which is responsible for regulating the body’s metabolism by producing hormones. A number of different disorders may arise when the thyroid produces an excessive amount of hormones (hyperthyroidism) or not enough (hypothyroidism).

It is estimated that approximately 1 in 50 people (rising to 1 in 20 for people over 60) have thyroid function problems – most frequently an underactive thyroid gland – and women are more commonly affected. A thyroid test will measure the amount of T4 (Thyroxine) and TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) to assess whether there is a problem with the thyroid. The test is suited to all adults over 18 years old.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What do thyroid function test results mean?

Laboratories use reference ranges to compare blood test analysed by them to what is found normally in healthy people. These ranges differ between laboratories but typical values for NHS laboratories are:

    Hormone    Normal ranges
TSH 0.2 to 5.5 miU/l (milliunits per litre)
    FT4 10 to 24.5 pmol/l (picomoles per litre)

A combination of high TSH and low FT4 can indicate an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), while a low TSH combined with a high FT4 can be a sign of hyperthyroidism. Any abnormal thyroid function test result needs to be discussed with your GP as more tests may be required to determine the exact cause behind elevated or decreased levels, and whether treatment is needed.

  • What are the hidden thyroid symptoms?

Many of the symptoms related to thyroid disorders are insidious and can go undiagnosed for a long time. These can include:

    • Tiredness
    • Depression
    • Weight gain/ weight loss
    • Sensitivity to cold
    • Slow movements and thoughts
    • Loss of sex drive
    • Pain, numbness and tingling in the hands
    • Muscle aches and weakness
    • Anxiety
    • Nervousness
    • Heart palpitations / racing
    • Irritability
    • Hair loss
    • Diarrhoea or constipation

Even though these can be very subtle, such symptoms could indicate a problem and you should express any concern you may have with your GP or healthcare provider.

  • Is a thyroid problem serious?

Even though most thyroid conditions can be effectively managed with the appropriate treatment, they can result in certain complications which are serious if they are left untreated. Therefore, being diagnosed and treated accordingly is crucial. Some of the complications can include the following:

Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) Underactive thyroid (Hypothyroidism)
    Potential complications Eye problems

    Pregnancy complications

    Heart failure

    Atrial fibrillation

    Osteoporosis

    Thyroid storm

    Heart problems

    Goitre

    Myxoedema coma

    Pregnancy complications

  • What is the link between hypothyroidism and gastrointestinal problems?

An underactive thyroid can affect the gastrointestinal system and cause problems such as constipation, gallstones and dyspepsia (heart burn).
