Despite its name, vitamin D is not a vitamin rather it is a prohormone (precursor of a hormone) made in our skin, and a nutrient found in certain foods. Its key role is to help regulate the amount of phosphate and calcium in the body, which is needed to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy. Additionally, there is some evidence that vitamin D is needed to support immune, brain, cardiovascular, and nervous system health, as well as normal lung function.
Many people in the UK are deficient in vitamin D but are unaware of this as it is not routinely measured. Vitamin D tests, also called a vitamin D (25-OH) tests, check the levels of vitamin D in the blood to see if they are adequate.
