Bluecrest

Despite its name, vitamin D is not a vitamin rather it is a prohormone (precursor of a hormone) made in our skin, and a nutrient found in certain foods. Its key role is to help regulate the amount of phosphate and calcium in the body, which is needed to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy. Additionally, there is some evidence that vitamin D is needed to support immune, brain, cardiovascular, and nervous system health, as well as normal lung function.

Many people in the UK are deficient in vitamin D but are unaware of this as it is not routinely measured. Vitamin D tests, also called a vitamin D (25-OH) tests, check the levels of vitamin D in the blood to see if they are adequate.

What is a vitamin D (25-OH) test?

The body gains vitamin D through sun exposure on the skin, vitamin D supplements, and certain foods such as eggs, oily fish and fortified cereals.

Vitamin D needs to go through a transformation process in the liver in order to convert into a form that the body can use. This new form is a chemical called 25-hydroxyvitamin D, also called calcidiol. Therefore assessing 25-hydroxyvitamin (25-OH) vitamin D is the most accurate way to see how much vitamin D your body has, as it is the amount that the body has available to use.

An at-home vitamin D test is a simple finger prick blood test that will test whether your vitamin D levels are too low or too high. If your vitamin D levels are high, it can cause bone and kidney problems. Toxicity is rare and usually caused by taking too many supplements containing vitamin D.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why take a 25 hydroxy vitamin D blood test?

A vitamin D (25-OH) test is a useful, non-invasive way to assess the vitamin D levels in the body. It can be highly beneficial to get tested because vitamin D deficiency is common and usually has no symptoms until complications such as osteoporosis develop.

It is also particularly recommended to have a vitamin D test if any of the following apply to you:

    • You spend a lot of time indoors and don’t get much sun on your skin
    • You are in a higher-risk group for vitamin D deficiency (for instance, you have dark skin or do not get a lot of sun exposure on your skin)
    • You have a high BMI
    • You have a diet low in animal products such as oily fish, red meat and diary
  • What are normal vitamin D blood test levels?

The “normal” range of vitamin D in the blood varies between laboratories. However, as a guide, a level below 25 nmol/L would be considered to diagnose Vitamin D deficiency.

  • What does a vitamin D deficiency mean?

Vitamin D deficiency means you have lower than recommended vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D’s role in promoting optimal calcium absorption is essential to maintain good musculoskeletal health in both adults and children. In fact, it protects children from various conditions including rickets, and adults from osteomalacia – which are both conditions causing soft, weak, and sometimes painful bones. Such disorders can lead to osteoporosis, which is the loss of bone density, and can in turn result in fractures.

Research also suggests that vitamin D might be beneficial in the treatment or prevention of certain conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, infections and neurological conditions though this is more controversial.

  • How can you increase your vitamin D levels?

Vitamin D levels can be increased by:

    • Eating vitamin D rich foods, including eggs, fortified cereals and oily fish
    • Taking daily supplements that include vitamin
    • Exposing your skin to sunlight but be careful not to get too much. You should ensure your skin does not burn or turn red.
